If you want to be paid to care for children under the age of 8, you are legally required to register with Ofsted or a registered childminder agency.     You must register if all the following apply:

  • You care for children under 8 years old
  • You look after them for more than 2 hours a day
  • You care for them in your own home
  • You receive payment (including payment in kind)
  • You can register with Ofsted online via the official GOV.UK portal.

    What You’ll Need to Register with Ofsted, you’ll need the following:

  • Enhanced DBS Check An enhanced check with barred lists for home-based workers from the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS).
  • First Aid Training first aid training appropriate for the age group you’ll be caring for.
  • Health Declaration Booklet Completed by your GP or healthcare provider to confirm you’re medically fit to work with children.
  • Two References Contact details for two people who can vouch for your suitability to work with children.
  • Certificate of Good Character Required if you’ve lived abroad in the past 5 years—issued by the relevant embassy.
